The term "contend" has been defined by Merriam-Webster as "to strive, struggle, assert, maintain." The Latin etymology conveys an image of stretching out, expanding, and aiming with purpose. 

Contending is not about fighting to destroy, but rather about fighting to improve. It's about striving and competing with the goal of becoming better and stronger, like a fighter sparring in the ring. It's not something that can be done alone, but is best when done with others contending with you, and with a coach walking alongside you. Sometimes contending involves struggling against outside obstacles, but often, contending is about internal character and personal development.

We are all contending for something: clarity in career direction, confidence in leadership opportunities, cohesion in team dynamics, a healthy work-life balance, and personal character development. I have experienced this throughout my life, from higher education to sharpen my knowledge and professional skills, to hours of daily practice to become a better musician, and from taking classes and coaching as a film actor, to seeking mentors to aid in my spiritual journey and in my growth as a husband and father.
